Club Rides Monday 2nd January 2023

Weather forecast for Saturday has high winds predicted so not suitable for a peloton style ride. Sunday being New Years Day might be a challenge for riders to make a 0900 start so this weekend we’re going to repeat what we did on Christmas Eve and run both club rides on the same day, Monday 2nd Jan.

So, plan to meet at 0850 for an 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst as usual. Then we’ll get into groups for two rides:

The Saturday ride will run at a slightly faster pace that the Sunday ride which will be a non-drop ride as usual. If all goes to plan, we should all meet up at the coffee stop at a similar time and there will be an option to change groups there.

“Saturday” ride, 83Km, coffee stop at Hockey’s after 39Km

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2113611?units=km

“Sunday” ride, 58Km, coffee stop at Hockey’s after 34Km

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2113596?units=km

Hope to see another strong turnout

PS. If anybody wishes to plan a gravel ride on Saturday or Sunday as an alternative to a road ride feel free to post one. I’ll be hors de combat this week as I’m having a wisdom tooth out on Friday

PPS. If anybody is road riding on Saturday, you might want to check out Brockenhurst Young Farmers Tractor and 4x4 run.  Probably best to avoid the same roads as that one if you can. Another reason why a gravel ride makes sense this week. Route and times are on social media.

Club Rides – Saturday 24th December

Slight change to the usual this week as Christmas Day falls on a Sunday so we’re running both the Saturday and Sunday rides on Saturday this week. No idea how many riders will turn up as weather forecast is not great but hopefully there will be some pent up demand for a club ride after the recent freeze.

So, plan is to meet at 0850 for a 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst as usual. Hopefully we will have enough riders for two different rides:

Route A is 80K around East Boldre, St Leonards, Bucklers Hard, Beaelieu, Lepe, Calshot with the coffee stop at Steff’s in Beaulieu at 53Km so theoretically about 2 hours into the ride at Saturday pace.

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2109553?units=km

Route B is similar but only 57Km missing out the Calshot part with the coffee stop at Steff’s in Beaulieu at 47Km so theoretically just under 2 hours into the ride at Sunday pace.

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2109554?units=km

So, if we do run two rides, we will hopefully not all arrive at exactly the same time. If numbers are low, we may default to route B and ride to the pace of the Sunday ride.

If the weather is inclement the rides are short enough to run non stop if we decide to and the Route A can also shorten and take the Route B from Beaulieu to Brock if desired.

Hope that makes sense and hope to see a good turnout for Saturday

Club Ride – Saturday 17th December – CANCELLED

Apologies all but the weather forecast for Saturday crosses the threshold for planning a safe club ride so reluctantly no club ride again this week.

I know it will “probably” be safe as it’s been dry but there is always a risk of run-off water freezing on the road so that’s the reason for not planning a peloton ride. I can still see ice that hasn’t melted in over a week so do not want to take unnecessary chances.

Stay safe and hope to see you all next week

Club Ride Saturday 3rd December 2022

Meet at 0850 for a 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst as usual. This week’s ride a 93Km loop in the forest taking in the last of the autumn leaves. Don’t worry about the long stretch on the A35 between Lyndhurst and Ashurst. There is a cycle path alongside the road that is totally suitable for road bikes and road tyres.

Weather forecast is fair so it will be winter pace, avoid getting hot and sweaty and then rapidly cooling and hopefully enjoy a hot drink and some hot food at Steff’s Kitchen.

The roads will be wet again this week so please get those mudguards and winter tyres fitted if you haven’t already. As the weather forecast is not favourable, I’ve kept the route close to home, so we’ve options to cut short if it scores too high on the Phil Harris misery index.

The roads will be wet this week and there is a lot of debris from trees so please be aware of that. Given that we are heading into autumn and the roads will be wet most of the time it’s a good time to get bikes prepped for winter with sturdier tyres and mudguards. We will also start to drop the pace a little this time of year.

Following last week’s unfortunate incident can we please use this situation to re-enforce the group riding behaviour that we have built an enviable reputation for. The video footage from last weeks has been reviewed and I’m pleased to report that no riders were to blame for the incident and everybody had made a perfect effort to single up and get close to the left of the road.

But there are things we can tighten up on. The speed of the groups has increased this year but that brings even greater demands on rider discipline. This is everybody’s responsibility. Please keep the groups in tight formation and either in a single or double line (not a mixture of the two) as is most appropriate and SAFEST for the peloton. Pay close attention to keeping lines straight as crooked lines look to cars like we’re 3 or 4 abreast and create road rage as we saw on North Road last week. We have to climb at our own speed on the longer climbs which is fine, but regroup as soon as possible at the top and don’t go more than two abreast when climbing (I’ve seen this many times from my position at the back when it comes to hills!). Riders speeding off the front of the group cause the group to fragment, riders then have to make hard efforts to get on and we can quickly look like a rabble on the road. Again, we saw this on the ride last week with a charity ride being all over the road and the net effect was drivers coming towards us making inappropriate overtaking manoeuvres out of frustration. Not excusing their driving but we can help prevent drivers making bad or inappropriate judgements,

Look forward to seeing another strong turnout for what looks like a lovely day for riding

Club Ride Saturday 6th August 2022

Meet at 0850 for a 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst as usual. A slightly easier route than the last few weeks to give everybody a little recovery. This week it’s a 117Km loop to the east of the area. Coffee stop is planned for A Spot in the Woods in Woodlands where we haven’t been in a while. As usual, depending on numbers we’ll split into a number of smaller pelotons for our safety, reducing inconvenience to other road users and hopefully not all arriving at the coffee stop at the same time.

We pass through Beaulieu a couple of times, and I’ve been reliably informed there is a water fountain in the car park behind the garage so ride leaders please give everyone the opportunity to refill bottles as it looks like another hot ride.

There is an all weekend event at Beaulieu so extra vigilance required around there with the traffic.

Off Road Ride - Sunday 31st July

Extra option this week from Catherine for those that prefer knobbly tyres and a different challenge:

Off road social ride - Sunday 31st July. Meet at 8:50am for a 9am start at the Brookley Road car park, Brockenhurst, as usual. The first few miles have some slightly challenging sections that may have to be taken gently if you are on a gravel bike but the rest of the ride will be the usual gravel tracks and tarmac. The ride is 31 miles; please ignore the weird bit of back-tracking shown on the map at the A35 crossing point. Plotaroute didn't want us to cross the road there and gave me an entirely unsuitable alternative. Refreshments will be taken at the Terrace Cafe in Brockenhurst, so bring sustenance for the ride if you feel you need it

Club Ride Saturday 30th July 2022

Meet at 0850 for a 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst as usual. A 128Km hilly loop to the north of the area with a coffee stop at The Coffee Pot in Hyde at 68Km. Route can be found at:

Thursday Night Chain Gang - 21st July

As numbers were higher for chain gang on the Brock - Burley course I'm assuming that this course is more popular so plan to make that the default going forward unless there are mass objections.  1900 start for the remainder of July then 1845 start for Augyst and 1830 start in September. Meet by St Saviours chech on the Burley Rioad . Wilverly Road junction

New riders welcome, don't be put off by the speed of the group, if there is a mixed group of riders new groups of similar ability form naturally

Thursday night chain gang – 14th July

With Station Road re-opening plan to run this week’s chain gang on our usual course.

So, meet at 1850 for at 1900 depart from outside St Saviours Church, Burley Road, Brockenhurst.

For those that haven’t ridden this course we ride up Rhinefield Road to the A35. Then the ride is neutralised whilst we go down the short stretch of main road and re-starts when we get to the top of the hill after the junction. We then ride through to Burley to the Queens Head. Then neutralise again as we go up the hill to the cricket ground. Then it restarts to Wilverley for hopefully a fast ride back to Brock. Extra care to be taken on the last part of the ride where there are pinch points on Burley Road as the priority for the pinch points is not always in our favour.

I’ll take a consensus on which course riders prefer or if it’s split maybe alternate for the rest of the season.

NFCC Sunday club Ride (Off Road) 19th June

I will be leading an off road social club ride this Sunday 19th June.  We will be meeting in Brockenhurst at the usual meeting place at 8:50am for a 9am start.  The weather forecast for Sunday changes by the hour but I think that we can expect mixed weather with cooler temperatures than currently.  We'll stop for coffee and cake at the Cider Pantry in Burley, which will involve a short detour off the route.  The route will follow permitted gravel tracks plus tarmac roads to link the tracks.  Suitable bikes include gravel bikes and mountain bikes; we will ride at the pace of the slowest rider and will not leave anybody behind.  The route is quite fast and not at all technical.  The link is below and hopefully it works!  Any questions just ask me below.  See you on Sunday!

Club Ride - 11th June 2022

Back for the second year by popular demand, the NFCC D-Day Tour of the Airfields returns with a few improvements over the inaugural ride last year.

The plan for this year is to split the ride into two stages, both starting and finishing in Brock with checkpoints for riders to join/exit as they feel suitable.

This year's route will stick to the WWII airfields and locations within the forest boundary and avoid the sections on the busy roads from last year to get to Hurn Airport. Also excluded this year is the Marshalling Yard at Marchwood, again with safety in mind due to the roads around the location.

Everyone will be pleased to hear Chief Soigneur Julie Wootton will be handling supplies with mid and end-of-ride coffee stops planned at Chez Wootton in Brockenhurst, and it would be great if we can get an indication of numbers by responding to this event.

An up-to-date route and plan for timings etc. can be found on the club website: https://www.newforestcc.co.uk/dday/

Chain Gang – Thursday 5th May

Two notes for this weeks chain gang

From this week and for all of May 1845 start

Given the situation with the roadworks around Holmsley we’ll use the B3055 course between Roundhill campsite and Hatchet Pond. Start point will be the junction of the B3055 and the road to the campsite. Plan for 3 repeats of the route and around 45 minutes as last week.

Thursday 28 April 2022

Club Ride Saturday 30th April 2022

As it’s a bank holiday weekend and a decent weather forecast expecting the forest to be busier than usual so this week the club ride will head north out of the forest and hopefully have less traffic to share the roads with.

Meet at 0850 for a 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst as usual.

Route is 111Km and can be found at:

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/1888939?units=km

Coffee stop is later than usual at 84Km so make sure you’ve got enough food to get there as it will be 1200 before we get to The Coffee Pot at Hyde.

Tuesday 26 April 2022

Thursday Night Chain Gang – 28th April

This week we’ll use the flat course that we used couple of weeks back between Roundhill campsite and Hatchet Pond on the B3055. Appreciate feedback from riders as to whether this course is preferred or the usual Burley loop or whether alternating it is more interesting.

Meet at the campsite road at 1830 and plan for 3 out and back legs to Hatchet Pond.

If numbers are high and speed increases during the legs expect the ride to fragment into two or more smaller groups as we go on. Don’t worry if it happens to you it is normal for the chain gang.

Hope to see another good turnout

PS, next week and for May the start time will move to 1845

Monday 11 April 2022

Thursday Night Chain Gang 14th April

Latest news on the roadworks on the A35 / Holmsley means that we will need another change of plan for Chain Gang this week.

The A35 is due to open this week so that route is not available. The reports are that Station Road will have traffic lights for a while so probably best to avoid that until we see how that’s working out.

So, plan for this week and possibly the next few is to use an out and back course between Roundhill campsite and Hatchet Pond along the B3055. This is a nice wide road with good visibility and should suit though and off drills. The only concession we will need to make is that each leg will be just under 5Km and will result in a stop and turn around. We should be able to make 3 sets of this course in our usual time slot.

Course here: https://www.plotaroute.com/route/1870714?units=km

So, plan to meet at the slip road for Roundhill campsite at 1830 this week.

Planned distance is 105Km and for those wanted extra we can plan this at the coffee stop. Expect local roads to be busy as it’s a decent forecast and Easter holiday. We have a number of regular riders on holiday / racing this week and they are also some of our strongest riders who do big turns on the front, so I’ll be looking for others to come forward and put their nose into the wind.

Thursday Night Chain Gang – Temporary Course

Due to the A35 / Holmsley roadworks we won’t be able to run our usual chain gang course for the time being. I’ve been out and checked the route and whilst the A35 is blocked we will use the following route:

1. Meet at St Saviours Church, Wilverley Road, Brockenhurst for an 1830 start. This will change to 1845 in May and 1900 in June.

2. Leg 1 Rhinefield Road to the A35. We’ll split into small groups for this leg as there is more traffic than usual on this road and a peloton if difficult to pass on parts of this road.

3. Neutralised zone for 0.5Km along the A35 until we pass Lyndhurst Road.

4. Leg 2, 5Km stretch of the A35 to the point at where the road is blocked.

5. Leg 3, 5Km return along the A35

6. Neutralised zone for 0.5Km along the A35 until we turn into Rhinefield Road.

7. Finish at junction with Meerut Road, Brockenhurst

Total distance will be the same as our usual route around Burley If anybody sees any changes that mean the A35 is re-opening to through traffic please let me know. As soon as that happens, I will post a new course. First few weeks of chain gang will be a little slower than usual whilst we all get used to the discipline again and to help any new riders assimilate to our way of riding.

Coffee stop at Steph’s in Beaulieu at around 53Km. Total distance 97Km but route a bit back loaded with hills so keep a bit in reserve for the second half.

After 3 weeks off we should finally be good to go this weekend.

Sunday club ride 20th February Cancelled

For the 3rd week running (we are cursed) very high winds are forecast for Sunday, making group riding unsafe. Fingers crossed for next week.

Club Ride Saturday 19th February 2022 – CANCELLED

Unfortunately, the weather forecast for Saturday is not compatible with a peloton style ride with winds over 50Mph forecast, not to mention the heavy rain adding to the misery. So, keep safe, do some bike maintenance and earn some brownie points at home to get permission for those long sunny summer rides to follow.

Club Ride Saturday 12th February 2022

Usual plan for a mid-winter ride. Just stretching the distance a little each week so this week a hilly 97Km ride to the north of the forest. Planned coffee stop at The Potting Shed after about 70Km for those that wish.

Meet at 0850 for an 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst.

Sunday Club Ride - 13th February 2022

Also a reminder that memberships are due for renewal so if you haven't got around to it yet go to British cycling, In the Get Started Box click on Joining a Club, Search for New Forest CC then Buy Membership.

We are a little limited for routes at the moment due to various roadworks and probable congestion on Rhinefield drive this weekend so will head east once more up to Ipley Cross, take the new rd back to Beulieu, a southern loop around St Leonards, back to Hatchett pond then back to Brock.

Those wanting Coffee will take the short detour to Setley Ridge.

Route downloadable here. https://www.strava.com/routes/2919184782081270850

Weather is a bit damp and cold so a good day to try out your new club waterproof jersey or Gabb if you have received them.

Hope to see another great turnout.

Sunday Club Ride Feb 6th 2022 - CANCELLED

Apologies for the late notice but I was hoping the forecast for tomorrow would improve. If anything it has slightly worsened. With up to 48MPH gusty winds forecast it is not safe for group riding so I have to cancel the ride.

Club Ride Saturday 5th February 2022

As we move into February, I’ll gradually stretch the Saturday club ride in terms of distance (weather permitting) so this week’s club ride will be a lumpy 93Km route to the north and east of the forest.

Route at:

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/1808141?units=km

Please meet at the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst at 0850 for an 0900 depart. Appreciate everybody’s effort to get to the start for 0850 so we can sort groups especially as we are getting ever increasing numbers on Saturdays.

As the overwhelming majority preferred a coffee stop to a non stop ride last week we can plan a visit to either The Potting Shed or Hockey’s on the way back.

Route downloadable here https://www.strava.com/routes/15421340

Not sure if I'll be able to make it (50-50) this week but hope to see another great turn out.

Club Ride Saturday 29th January 2022

Forecast this week is much better than recent so back to normal start time, 0900, so please meet at 0850 for an 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst. Appreciate everyone making an effort to get to the start on time as with the ever increasing numbers it helps to be able to split us into smaller groups for our safety and to minimise the disruption to other road users.

We’re still constrained by the A35 / Holmsley roadworks so will use the quieter roads to the east of the region.

Route at: https://www.plotaroute.com/route/1801390?units=km

Route is a little longer, 86Km than the last couple and weather permitting I’ll continue to make each week a little longer and harder as we build base fitness. Expected pace will be around 26-27KmH this time of year.

Given the weather it may be feasible to schedule a quick coffee stop in Beulieu. We’ll judge the weather and the mood of the ride and decide on the day whether to take that option. Post ride the Setley Ridge Café on the A337 just south of Brock seems a popular place for those riding on or wanting to refuel post ride.

Hope to see another good turnout
