Club Ride 30th December 2023 - Plan B

Due to Storm Gerrit and its aftermath the high winds forecast have crossed the threshold for a group road ride. So unfortunately, no peloton style ride this week. However, blessed as we are with a network of cycle paths plan is to get out on off road bikes instead.

Planned route is 62Km but there are opportunities to change it as we go depending on how we feel, how many punctures we incur, or any new and innovative mechanical fails the group can come up with. Options for coffee stop along the way as we see fit.

Sorry it’s a last-minute change of plan but the weather forecast keeps changing. Anyone turning up on a road bike not having read this communication is automatically entered into  Phil’s award ceremony for one of his many unfair and undemocratic awards. Based on the last time we had an off-road ride, turning up on a road bike is now called “doing a Neil”.

Please note that I have reversed the S4 route so that we don't have to grind back to Brock into a solid headwind.

On that note, the forecast is currently that there might be high winds around in which case we would have to cancel. So keep an eye out for cancellations.

With Saturdays route also potentially affected by high winds we may run a New Years day ride so keep an eye out for that too.

Sunday club ride 24th December 2023

What could be more christmassy than getting out on a bike for a couple of hours to escape loved ones and pre-emptying a few calories before the festive gorging begins?

A quick google search of 'What did Jesus think of cycling' led to rather disappointing results but I'm pretty confident he'd have been pro, after all did he not say unto us 'Blessed are the spokemakers'?*

Ride concludes at Setley Ridge cafe where you can choose something festive like Mulled wine (possibly) and mince pies (possibly). Or alternatively something nice. All dependent on them being open, which I haven't checked.

Looks like a decent opportunity for a wintry club ride this week and I’m sure a lot less flooding than last week’s aqua bike ride. Bit of a change to the format this week as we’ve been invited to end our ride at Boost who are holding a demo / open day on Saturday and are providing coffee, beer and pizzas for riders. Details at:

Club Ride 9th December 2023

 

At last, a chance of a club ride this week. Forecast not great but after the last three weeks I’ll take it. Looks like it will be wet and windy so it will be winter ride protocol. This means a slightly lower pace to stop riders getting hot and sweaty and then getting very cold. I suspect riders will be naturally a bit slower after the lack of riding for most of us over the last few weeks anyway. Ride is just 72Km around the east of the region with no planned stop. For those that want a coffee the core ride will finish at Boost in Brockenhurst where there is a coffee and cake van, bike racks and indoor seating where wet riders will not be frowned upon.

Mudguards please. Roads are going to be very wet and it’s no fun following riders with no or inadequate mudguards so please show some respect to your fellow riders.

Forecast keeps chaning for Sunday but the possibilty of sleet is hanging around. Should be safe for riding if a little high on the Misery index.

After making my glorious return last weekend I shall once again be absent this Sunday as an invitation to a warm party in London with free drinks and grub just pipped-in ahead of the early morning wake-up call and a couple of hours with frostbite. Hope to see another surprisingly good turnout.

Club Rides Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th November

Saturday looks like heavy rain all morning and definitely not fun to be out.

Sunday there are strong winds forecast that make a peloton ride unsafe.

Very annoying to be writing this on a sunny Friday that looks like a great day for a ride.

As of today (Thursday 16^th) the weather forecast for the weekend is not looking good for club rides. Saturday is moderate winds and some heavy rain and Sunday has high winds that exceed what we consider safe and sensible for peloton style rides. Off road ride is a possibility for Sunday if it’s just high winds.

I’ll keep an eye on the forecast and make a final call Friday morning.

After last week’s washout it looks good for a decent winter club ride this week. Expecting the roads to still be messy with all the rain we’ve had so mudguards please. Mudguards that respect those riding behind you and not those that just look after your own backside are the order of the day for winter club rides.

Current forecast for Saturday is for high winds that mean that a peloton style ride is unsafe so as it stands no club ride this Saturday. I’ll keep an eye on the forecast Friday morning and make a call on whether a gravel ride is a viable plan B. Currently it scores pretty high on the Phil Harris misery index so it’s 50/50. Hopefully it will improve and give us an option for an off road ride on the gravel tracks. Sunday’s ride is another option so can have some extra groups and make a plan for a second loop after the coffee shop if there is a desire for a longer ride.

So, it’s mudguards on please, drop the pace a little and start getting into winter riding mode.

Weather forecast at the moment is pretty good for Sunday but with bad weather all around it's worth keeping an eye on. Likely to be lots of standing water at a minimum so if you have mudguards. it's time to fit them (Note to self!).

Finally as Spike Milligan's tombstone says 'I told you I was ill'. Tests show that I have Pneumonia in both lungs so not entirely surprising that I haven't been feeling on top form. I'm not sure how long antibiotics take to kick in so I guess I'll be there or I won't.

Looks like there could be a lot of standing water in the forest this week and forecast of light rain on Saturday. After last week’s hissy fits from some of the NFCC snowflakes it’s a flatter route round some of our local roads and I’ve been out and filled in every imperfection in the road surface for you. There are sportives in the forest both days this weekend and route is designed to keep us out of their way as much as possible and where we do share the road to be going in the opposite direction. Usual meet at 0850 for a 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst. After our recent adventures outside of the forest this week’s club ride is a local one. I’ve tried to keep the route to the roads that are quieter as it’s a bank holiday weekend so expect more traffic than usual. There are also showers forecast for late on Saturday, so route does give chance of a replan of the latter part of the ride. Planned ride is 133Km with a planned coffee stop at the Community Shop in Minstead at 77Km.

After last week’s mistaken prophecy about the weather forecast your hapless ride leader is once again making wild assumptions that the weather will be fine, and that it is safe and wise to venture further afield. So, with wild and probably misplaced optimism this week we will head north to Longstock and hopefully avoid the inevitable traffic in the New Forest as much as possible.

We’ll take in a route heading east to Beaulieu before heading north. Coffee stop will be at the Waitrose Garden Centre, use the Cherry Tree Café (the one in the garden) as it’s better for bike parking.

Another slightly iffy forecast for a Saturday but this week the chances of showers and winds only score a 4 on the Phil Harris Misery Index which is two better than last week. Looks like some stiff winds and drizzle / light rain to contend with. So, plan this week is to keep it fairly local, but shorter than usual and make plans on the fly if anyone wants to go long in the afternoon.

Club Ride 15th July 2023- OFF ROAD

 

Weather forecast this Saturday is for high winds that cross the threshold for safe peloton style riding so this week’s club ride will be off road. MTB, gravel, cross bikes all welcome and pace will be adjusted to suit whoever is riding and what machinery they are on.

Planned ride is 73Km but is subject to change depending on how the weather turns out and if there are any mapping errors. As with all club rides we will stick to the marked cycle paths or roads that interconnect the paths. Route has been kept local to give us flexibility if the weather turns to 11 on the Phil Harris Misery Index.

Weather forecast this week is not brilliant, so the plan is to keep it local and keep the plan flexible in case conditions are better or worse than the forecast. Route is just 109Km with a coffee stop at Setley Ridge after 62Km. That will be a good point for any re-planning and making it a bit longer if that suits everybody.

Sunday Club Ride 2nd July 2023

Meet as usual in the Brookley Rd Car park in Brockenhurst at 8.50 for a 9.00 A.M start.

Folks will have noticed that we have been running a faster group on Sunday's recently in addition to the usual slower paced groups. If members want a faster ride on Sundays, I'm fine and dandy with that but will continue to prioritise the culture of Sunday rides being strictly no-drop rides at the pace of the slowest. (Also hope to get a slower group going soon if there's the demand)

With that in mind it's very helpful if folk can arrive 8.50 rather than 8.59 so that we can get organised into groups. Also particularly helpful if new riders can arrive 8.45 so that I can get an inkling of which group is appropriate for them. Bit embarrassing when I ask riders to go in the slower group and they turn out to be uber-fit!

Club Ride 1st July 2023

 

Usual meet at 0850 for a 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst. Please make every effort to turn up on time as we try to work out how many groups and what size groups to ride. It is extremely disruptive to planning when riders turn up at the last minute.

This week’s route is a 133Km ride around the south and west of the area. There is a large tractor rally in the Bartley area, so the route is designed to keep us away from that traffic. Route can be found here:

The weather forecast is excellent so I have posted a slightly longer route this week. We will take a short break at Nomansland for those that need it.

Couldn't organise the traditional tail-wind finish ufortunately but hope to see another great turnout nonetheless.
