Club Ride – 5th October 2024

Meet at 0850 for an 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst.

This week a 122Km route north of the forest. As we get towards the winter rides not many opportunities to take the rides further afield so hopefully making the most of a half decent forecast this weekend.

Coffee stop planned at the Community Shop in Broughton at around 54Km after a 20Km sequence of hills.

Not required just yet but please start thinking about prepping your bikes with mudguards and winter tyres. Your fellow riders will thank you for sparing them the Belgian toothpaste and a reduced number of stops in the wet and cold.

Sunday Club Ride 29th September 2024

Meet as usual in Brookley Rd Car Park at 8.50 for a 9.00 A.M start.
Quick note on this route: From Milkham inclosure to Redshute the road is particularly narrow but has regular passing places. Riding two-abreast will deter unsafe and illegal passes but we need to communicate well to ensure that we all use the passing places. Both, when there is oncoming traffic and equally when we have vehicles wishing to overtake. Watch out for oncoming traffic in case it fails to use the passing places and be ready to single-up quickly where necessary.
Finish as usual at Setley Ridge for coffee and post ride Carb-loading.
Forecast at the time of posting is reasonable so I hope to see a great turnout.
Phil H

Club Ride – 28th September 2024

Meet at 0850 for an 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst.

This week a 126Km route around the forest. Coffee stop planned at 71Km at the Community Shop in Minstead. Time to break out some of the winter gear but at least the forecast at the time of posting is dry.

Route can be downloaded from here:

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/48577053?privacy_code=HwrN9FGez9R37r77nHGBCepqoeSaLiky

or

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2765008?units=km

This week we will also introduce a new feature for the club ride. We will be having a sweepstake where you predict the point where Matt K’s Di2 fails and goes into single speed mode for the third week running. Prize is to watch him ride up the next hill in an inappropriate gear.

Slightly shorter route than usual this week and made out of two loops for anyone wanting a shorter ride. Planned distance 104Km with a coffee stop at Steff’s in Beaulieu at 49Km. I suspect a number of riders will be doing the Isle of Wight / New Forest Audax on Sunday so probably don’t want a long hard ride on the day before.

Sunday Club Ride 4th August 2024

Meet as usual in Brookley rd car park, Brockenhurst at 8.50 for a 9.00a.m start.
First a little housekeeping.
Occasionally it's good to have a little reset so I just want to mention a few of the base lines for the Sunday club rides which are applicable to both faster and slower groups alike.
Firstly the obvious. We always follow the highway code, Most of us ride in club kit and we need to be ambassadors both for the club and for cyclists and cycling in general.
Where the roads allow, we ride two abreast, in two straight and tidy lines. When it's safer to do so or if a car needs to pass and it's safe to allow them to do so we go into single file. A call of car back is useful so that the rider at the front can judge what action to take.
It's always a strictly no-drop ride. That goes equally for both groups. If you are near the back and see someone dropping off, let those in front know so that they can ease the pace or stop. No problem sprinting up a hill so long as you wait at the top or next junction to regroup.
If the faster group is pushing the pace, do so as a team whether using through and off or by using stronger riders at the front. Work together and keep communicating. Someone is always going to be the one struggling on a fast ride. It might not be you this week but it might be you the next week.
If anyone is struggling on a particular week, don't be afraid to say so. We can reduce the pace or even take a short cut if required and possible. The Sunday rides were created to be inclusive. I would like it to remain both a safe, enjoyable group to ride in and one with a sound ethical and empathetic culture.
Here endeth....
Forecast for Sunday looks pretty good.
Finish as usual in Daisy tea rooms, Settley Ridge for excessive vittles.
Hope to see an epic turnout as usual.

Club Ride – 29th June 2024

Choice of rides this Saturday. An on-road ride around the Isle of Wight and an off-road social option that Jay has planned. The on-road ride is a fairly standard loop of the island with an additional trip up the The Needles.

Plan is as follows:

0900 Ferry from Lymington. Arrive Yarmouth 0940. Suggest book in advance in case the crossing gets booked up. https://www.wightlink.co.uk

Couple of hours riding and a lunch stop in Bembridge.

Couple more hours back across the south of the island and optional Ice Cream stop at The Needles.

Back to Lymington and maybe another drink depending on where we are with ferry times.

Aiming for the 1605-1645 Ferry back. (Or maybe the 1505 if we’re ahead of plan).

Meet at 0850 for an 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst as usual. Forecast for Saturday at time of posting is not good, lots of showers and some reasonably strong winds. Club Ride – 8th June 2024

Meet at 0850 for an 0900 depart from the main car park in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst as usual.

With the nation commemorating the D-Day anniversary in many ways this week the club ride will pay its own respects by passing by the four main airfields that were used in the New Forest. This week’s club ride is a 116Km ride within the forest. Route can be downloaded from here:

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2644601?units=km

Coffee stop planned at the Minstead Community Shop at around 64Km. Please note that after our last visit anyone wanting to borrow their cushion will have to fight Smithy for it!

Route will take us west to the Holmsley South airfield and a photo opportunity of the memorial. Before passing the site of the Ibsley airfield we will be using slightly busier roads than usual around Bransgore as I saw a load of roadworks in the Bockhampton area this week. When we get to Poulner take extra care on the road through to the Alice Lisle as the road surface through there is atrocious.

After Ibsley we will pass along the site of the Stoney Cross airfield before heading for coffee. Our last airfield will be Beaulieu before heading back to Brock.

Club Ride – 11th May 2024

After a couple of weeks with excursions out of the forest this week a chance to enjoy our local roads. Planned route is 125Km around the forest and with a splendid weather forecast plenty of opportunity for those wanting to extend. Planned route is here:

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2612028?units=km

Scheduled coffee stop at the Community Shop in Minstead, this will be at 76Km so please ensure that you’ve food and drink to last that far. We will pass through Beaulieu so can top up water bottles at around 53Km if required.

Extra vigilance required on the forest roads this week, apart from the usual traffic, pony foals are being born as well as the stallions being out, so please keep awareness high and keep the groups tidy and compact.

Thanks

Barry
